Stress in the workplace is inevitable. Deadlines pile up, conversations become tense, and sometimes the energy in the room can feel overwhelming. The way we respond to stress, both within ourselves and with each other, can make all the difference.
One of the tools we use in improv is a simple three step reset to help release tension and bring ourselves back into the moment. For best results, try it with your eyes closed and take a moment just for yourself.
Breathe
Take a slow inhale, followed by a full exhale. Let your shoulders and jaw relax, allowing your body to settle.
Express Freely
On your next exhale, release a sound that reflects how you feel. It could be frustration, fatigue, uncertainty, or sadness. It is a playful and effective way to let go of what you are holding onto.
Smile and Release
Smile gently. Take one more deep breath in and exhale however you wish.
This simple tool is always available to help shift your energy and reconnect with the present moment.
If stress lingers, consider taking a short walk to change your scenery and give your mind a break.
At Improv for Work & Wellness, we use exercises like this to help teams reduce tension, boost morale, and strengthen collaboration. Through improv, participants practice listening, supporting one another, and thinking creatively in a psychologically safe environment.
When teams experience a brave and supportive space, they feel more comfortable speaking up for their needs, sharing ideas, trying new approaches, and learning from mistakes without fear. Leaders play an important role in setting this tone, creating space for curiosity, connection, and a little bit of fun along the way.
Because people feel psychologically safe and supported, they do not just work harder. They work smarter, together.
